Local heroes

On 23rd December 1940 a plane crashed on the field on Little Plumstead green in front of the Manor House, owned by Mr Joe and Miss Mary Wiley. For rescuing the pilot from a burning aircraft four men received Expressions of Commendation for Brave Conduct from King George Vl who gave orders for the publication of their names in the London Gazette:in March 1941. They were Clement Claude Benns, who for many years lived at the Octagon in Water Lane, Herbert Brundish, a senior air raid patrol man and husband of the head teacher at the school, Benjamin Hardesty, the local police constable (my father), and Gerald Wiley, a special constable.
